Thriller!

My mom asked to cook my favorite meal for my birthday, and I asked for "Thriller". It is a shortcut version of lasagna, made with large shells instead of long lasagna pasta, and dispensing with the ricotta cheese. Delicious, nonetheless! She adds Italian hot sausage, mozarella and lots of garlic.

The mystery is how she named it "Thriller". Hopefully she'll clear that up in a comment...

Here we are, ready to dish it up. Thanks, Mom!

P.S. Dig your new eyeglasses.

I love thriller. I think it has taken different forms over the years. My favorite is the version of thriller that is cooked in a crockpot all day! But at the end of the day, any thriller is good!!

Grandma and I talked about how your mom makes it in the crockpot. Same recipe, different results.

All good!

I can't remember how the name came about, other then years ago when we lived in SD...I do like the BAKED version best...the crock pot is good...no crust top...and that is what some of us like best!!! also this is a good recipe to server several people.........

Several people. Yeah. Like the Air Force branch of the military. ;-)

Just to clarify...I cook the meat the night before, then in the morning I put the meat, sauce and spices in the crockpot to simmer all day. Then just before supper I cook the noodles and add them and the motz. cheese to the mix. Sometimes I'll then throw the whole thing in several cassarol pans, top w/more motz. and brown in the oven. It really easy for company, everything is mostly done ahead of time. The only time we finished a whole batch, I was serving 10 adults and 1 kid! Aunt Lynn's version involves green peppers and is also very good!

Deb... that really does sound good!

I guess maybe I'm the only one who's never actually made it.

But, I DO make a killer chile relleno casserole. I like making Mexican food better than Italian.

I remember the story of how it was named. I was told they (mom, aunt lynn?) were thinking of a name for the dish. Someone said they were thrilled when it was made... or it was thrilling to eat/make. It was something along those lines.

Deb, thanks for clarifying the crock pot issue. I thought you cooked the noodles in there and let it set. I couldn't help but think how mushy it might get.

Ok everyone with different versions and ways of cooking it, listen up !!! It's only called thriller when it is made as Mom,Grandma,or Joan makes it.No subs allowed ! If so, has to have another name. Hurray for Lori, she recalls part of the story about naming it. When they were living back East your mother put this together and baked it. I was there for dinner,of course, and it was delicious and different from the traditional goulash. I said we should name it. At the time the TV was on and we were watching the program Thriller . The rest is history.
